At MK Dance On Hudson, the teachers and directors thoroughly review each student and dance style to best determine the most appropriate "Levels" for the dancer. We understand that our class levels can sometimes be a little confusing. Dance placement is different compared to other extracurricular activities or what your child is used to at school!
We do not have thirteen grades. In fact, we only have 5-6 levels depending on style of dance. It's typical for dancers to remain at the same level for more than one year to truly master specific skills and be prepared for the next level. Dance Levels are not a 'Race' to Level 5 or 6 but are in place to make sure dancers at MKDOH are able to enjoy their time dancing safely and not feel overwhelmed at any point.
It's also not about just “knowing” a dance move but is based upon maturity, technicality and being consistently ready for something more advanced.
Ages 1-8: With our youngest dancers, level placement is generally determined by their age and peer group. We focus more on introducing the fundamentals of dance and teaching movements that are age appropriate.
Ages 9+: Around this age, placements are made with several factors in mind. This includes technique (execution, strength, musicality); Class Readiness (maturity, focus, work ethic, attendance); Dance Knowledge (terminology).
Different Styles ~ Different Levels ~ Different Friends: A dancer may be placed at different levels based on style. Dancers progress differently not only from each other but also within dance disciplines.
At MKDOH we strive to make sure that our classes have a good balance within that level. One student may excel at one aspect of that discipline while another may excel at something else. We hope they learn not only from their teacher but also from each other and Be Supportive, Enthusiastic and Encouraging students and classmates.
Our goal is to make sure that students progress in a timeline and in levels that is best suited for them so that they can truly ENJOY and GROW as dancers.
